Harvest now, decrypt later is already happening
Adversaries with the resources to store encrypted traffic today can decrypt it once a sufficiently capable quantum computer exists. That risk applies now to any data that needs to stay confidential for years, not only after a quantum computer arrives. NIST has finalized post-quantum standards including ML-KEM and ML-DSA, and CNSA 2.0 sets a 2027 deadline for new National Security Systems to use approved algorithms. Knowing which of your services still rely on classical cryptography is the first step toward migration.
